Free tools for picture manipulation and writing in Linux aren't that challenging to insight if you cognize where on earth to facade.

Avidemux is a unrestricted picture editor in chief designed for unadorned cutting, filtering and encryption tasks. It supports abundant record types, plus AVI, DVD compatible MPEG files, MP4 and ASF, using a mixture of codecs. Interestingly, it's accessible for Linux, BSD, Mac OS X and Windows beneath the GNU GPL permit. I haven't tested Mac OS X and Windows versions, but the programme runs superior beneath Ubuntu Linux (Dapper Drake).

For folder conversion, there's FFMPEG, which is free-but you'll have to acquire to use it through with the command string. Unfortunately, the MAN page for the program isn't exceedingly free.

Let's say you impoverishment to human a record called MYVIDEO.AVI to the mpg format, which is the data format corroborated by the K3 CD flaming programme. After installation FFMPEG (you can use Synaptic Package Manager), blaze up Terminal.

cd /home/user/Converts

ffmpeg -i MYVIDEO.avi -target ntsc-vcd MYVIDEO.mpg
and hit Enter. That should get the transformation system started, and you ought to see more than a few file whorl by in the Terminal frame. Don't accidentally shut up the window, because that will come to a close the transformation. You can minify it, even so.
To mortal an avi report to SVCD format, you would type:
ffmpeg -i MYVIDEO.avi -target ntsc-vcd MYVIDEO.mpg
There's a GUI front-end for FFMPEG on Mac OS X, but I haven't found one for Linux.
For cacophonous DVDs, I use AcidRip. Very crude but fast-paced and prompt.
